Who we are Founded in 1998, Habitat for Humanity of Island County is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. We are a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian ministry founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live. We build with people in need regardless of race or religion. We welcome volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds.
What we build
Our houses are simple, decent, and affordable to low-income families. Whenever possible, we build energy-efficient, sustainable housing. To date we have built 23 houses on Island County! Currently Habitat for Humanity of Island County works in partnership with families to build five homes per year. Our affiliate generally builds 2 and 3 bedroom / 1 bath homes with an average size of 1000 square feet. Costs are approximately $90,000 per home, depending on size.
Successful Homeownership
It is our goal to ensure successful homeownership over the long run for all Habitat families. Applicants are required to meet several qualifications to ensure success. Prospective homeowners are selected based on: level of need, willingness to partner and ability to repay loan. Each homeowner invests 500 “sweat equity” hours in building his/her home and others, attends homeowner education classes and assumes an affordable mortgage. Homeowner monthly mortgage payments are used to purchase property and build more homes in Island County. Habitat for Humanity follows a non-discriminatory policy of family selection and abides by Equal Opportunity Housing lending guidelines. Click on a link below. |
